Izmir Sights, Sounds and Hotels
The Velvet Castle (Kadifekale) in Izmir was built in the 4th century B.C. on the summit of Mt. Pagos by Lycimachos, one of Alexander the Great’s generals. Steeped in legend it is believed that a goddess appeared to Alexander the Great in a dream and ordered him to build a city on the spot and move the inhabitants of the old city of Izmir to this new location. From the heights of the castle one can gain a glorious view of the Gulf of Izmir and the city lying below.
There are many different threories and beliefs surrounding Izmir's Velvet Castle, but no matter which one you decide is the most probably, it is still a wonder to behold and worth the effort whilst visiting Izmir. Prepare to be pampered and indulged during your stay in the fabulous Izmir hotels.
