Istanbul Sights, Sounds and Hotels
The Ayasofya Camii in Istanbul, was originally built in 537 CE by the Emperor Justinian, but was destroyed during the Nika Revolt. Justinian, determined to implement his imperial authority then built a new and superior church on the site, which was later converted to a mosque after the Ottoman invasion in 1453. In 1935 Ataturk converted the ancient building to a museum. The spot where Byzantine emperors were once crowned is marked by a decorative marble square.
